Candidate Biography

From candidate Website

Jim Sensenbrenner was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1943, and shortly thereafter moved to Shorewood, Wisconsin with his family. There he attended the Milwaukee Country Day School, and went on to Stanford University for his undergraduate degree, and the University of Wisconsin – Madison for law school.

Jim got his start in politics when he was first elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1968. In 1975 he won a special election for the Wisconsin State Senate, and in 1978, he was elected to serve in the US House of Representatives.

During his time in Congress, Jim has served as Chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology (1997-2001), and Chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary (2001-2007). Currently, he serves as the Vice-Chairman on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

Jim’s many legislative achievements while House Judiciary Committee Chairman include the USA Patriot Act, the REAL ID Act, and an extension of the Voting Rights Act. In 2008, he worked across the aisle with then-House Democratic Majority Leader Steny Hoyer to pass the Americans with Disabilities Restoration Act. He also served as a House floor manager in the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton.

Jim is widely known for his strong conservative values, and his way of telling it like it is. His pro-life, limited-government, and anti-tax voting record regularly ranks him among the most conservative Members of Congress.

In his free time, Jim enjoys reading, collecting stamps, tending to his dogs, and watching sports – especially the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers. He also enjoys spending time with his family. He has been married to Cheryl Warren Sensenbrenner since 1977, and together they have 2 adult sons, Frank and Bob. Jim and Cheryl were proud to welcome daughter-in-law, Diana, to the family last year.
