Since his early days, Jim Swanson has always been driven to be the consummate outdoorsman. Whether he is hunting or competitive shooting with his favorite Muzzle Loader, paddling a canoe in a wilderness area or landing a fish, Jim seeks success through hard work, knowledge and expert skills.
However, Jim also realized long ago that being an outdoorsman involved much more than bringing home a full game bag. Jim believes in the concept espoused by Aldo Leopold that a true outdoorsman gives back to nature in many ways. He was President of the Wisconsin Muzzle Loaders shooting to develop a program to teach shooting to the youth of Wisconsin. In the past 12 years, he has introduced over 6000 children and often their parents to Muzzle Loader shooting. For this effort the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation named Jim the 2011 Outdoor Conservation Educator of the Year. Jim has also burned many a tank of gas in his chain saw while helping to improve trout stream habitat. Even in his role as Lead Teacher in a Charter School for At-Risk Youth, Jim developed a program that culminated in his students spending a week camping in the wilds of the Chequamegon National forest.
Jim has had a wealth of experience in the world of work. He has been a folk lift driver, an outdoor writer, self-employed and even a stay-at-home dad. Jim has learned from hard work that middle class is the heart and soul of Wisconsin. All employees deserve a strong voice in their work place, and they deserve a living wage. Jim also recognizes that all people, working, retired, student, or children deserve access to quality health care. He also knows that small business is the key to creating good paying, long lasting jobs. Additionally, Jim understands the critical role that quality public education plays in having a health economy and the ability of individuals to improve their economic status.
Jim has been happily married to his wife Amy Riddle-Swanson for 11 years. His two daughters, Marissa and Elise were both top ranked students at Menomonie High School. Jim introduced his daughters to outdoor activities nearly from birth. They are both veteran wilderness travelers. They are in major colleges and doing great.
Jim is entering this race because conservation efforts in Wisconsin have suffered from either being neglected or outright attacks for far too long. It is time for Wisconsin to resume its traditional role as a leader in conservation and environmental protection.
Jim recognized the only way to accomplish this goal is to end the pay to play money driven politics that are in force today and restore the tradition of the Wisconsin Way.
As an assembly person, Jim will bring his ethics of hard work, knowledge and fairness to representing the 29th Assembly District.
Some of Jim's accomplishments:
