Biography

From candidate Web site

In November 1998, Tammy Baldwin was elected to Congress to represent Wisconsin's 2nd Congressional District, becoming the first woman from Wisconsin to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. She was re-elected in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. Congresswoman Baldwin serves on the powerful House Committee on Energy and Commerce, which has jurisdiction over health care, telecommunications, energy, consumer protection, air quality and environmental health, food and drug safety, and interstate commerce issues. She also serves on the House Judiciary Committee and its Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security.  Congresswoman Baldwin is a leading advocate for health care for all, preserving and protecting Social Security and Medicare, and honoring our nation’s commitment to our veterans. Throughout her career in public service, Tammy Baldwin has earned a reputation as a thoughtful, studious legislator who seeks out opportunities to work constructively with her colleagues in the pursuit of the common good.

In the 111th Congress, Tammy Baldwin is dedicated to putting the common good of all Americans ahead of narrow special interest legislation that will benefit only the privileged few. She is recognized as a leader in expanding the number of Americans with access to quality health care, investing in lifesaving medical research (including stem cell research) and protecting women’s health and a woman’s right to choose. Her work on behalf of her constituents has provided federal investment in numerous community economic development efforts throughout south central Wisconsin, critical support for Wisconsin’s rural hospitals, and funds for projects that expand and protect recreational opportunities for Wisconsin families.

Tammy Baldwin began her career in elective office as a member of the Dane County Board of Supervisors in 1986. In the same year, she served briefly on the Madison, Wisconsin City Council, filling an aldermanic vacancy. Congresswoman Baldwin served four terms as a Dane County Supervisor (1986-1994), while also running for, and winning, a seat in the Wisconsin State Assembly in November 1992. She served as a State Representative for the 78th Assembly District comprising central and south Madison from January 1993 to January 1999. In the state legislature, Tammy Baldwin wrote laws to reform the campaign finance system, make drinking water safe, and clean up Wisconsin’s lakes.

Tammy Baldwin was born in the district she now represents in Congress. Raised there jointly by her mother and her maternal grandparents, Congresswoman Baldwin graduated first in her class of 510 students at Madison West High School in 1980. She received an A.B. degree from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1984 with majors in government and mathematics. In 1989, while an active member of the Dane County Board of Supervisors, she earned her J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School and practiced law from 1989-1992.
