Candidate Information

Candidate Biography

I was born in Milwaukee in March 1960. I am a graduate of Bay View High School, and after graduation I worked as a waitress until becoming manager of a small business in Bay View. My husband Michael and I are lifelong residents of Bay View. Michael and I have had the privilege of raising our two sons in the same community in which we we’re raised. This has made me uniquely qualified to represent this district in the state Legislature. My involvement with my children’s education led me to a life of civil engagement and public service. I am a former PTA member and President. in 1991, after learning first-hand the issues facing public education, I ran successfully for Milwaukee Public School Board. I served on the School board until 1998, when I was elected to the state Assembly. In 2014, I was re-elected to the State Assembly for an 8th term. I currently serve on the committees for Urban Education, Veterans and Military Affairs, Labor (ranking member) and Government Operations and State Affairs (ranking member). As your Representative in the Assembly I have made worker’s rights, education, and health care my top priorities. I am a member of the Wisconsin Congress of Parents and Teachers as well as the Assembly Democratic Task Force on Working Families. As your representative, I was named a Flemming Fellow by the Center for Policy Alternatives and as a Fellow by the Bowhay Institute at the University of Wisconsin’s La Follette School of Government.
