Candidate Information

Candidate Biography

I was re-elected to my seventh term in the State Assembly for the 2019-2020 Legislative Session. In 2017, I was elected by my colleagues to serve as Assembly Democratic Leader. Previously, I served on the Joint Committee on Finance for two sessions, advocating for responsible investments in education, infrastructure, and healthcare. Prior to serving in the Legislature, I worked in government at the federal, state, and local levels. A native of Oshkosh, I hold a bachelor’s degree in political science from Hamline University and a master’s degree in public affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I also had the opportunity to teach American Government at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 2005-2006. In 2016, I was named Legislator of the Year by the Wisconsin Professional Police Association. I have also been honored with the 2014 UW Oshkosh Chancellor’s Medallion in recognition of the leadership and service I provided while serving as a member of the Wisconsin State Building Commission. And in 2012, I received the Rebecca C. Young Leadership Award from Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin for my work on behalf of women’s health and reproductive rights in Wisconsin. My wife Liz and I are proud to live in our hometown of Oshkosh with our children Beatrix and Gethin, and our two pugs.
