Shaun was raised outside of a small agricultural town in western Iowa. His parents owned a beef cattle and hog operation that they lost to bankruptcy during the 1980’s farm crisis. This financial hardship played a significant role in his parents’ divorce, and as a result, he was raised by a single mother. His mom moved Shaun and his two sisters to northern Missouri, where she gained employment in a factory. To this day, Shaun’s dad is a livestock farmer and his mom is a recently retired factory worker. Shaun studied elementary education at the University of Iowa. After working at public schools in his 20’s, Shaun shifted his career to transportation. He worked for the Minneapolis Public Works Department as a planner for 8 years, leading that city’s efforts to become one of the most bicycle-friendly in the country. Shaun and his husband moved to Richland County in 2014, returning to Shaun’s rural roots. They live on an 80-acre grass farm near the village of Yuba, population 70. They have been foster parents and organic pig farmers, and are currently operators of the renovated Yuba State Bank Apartments. They are also in the process of restoring their 4-square farmhouse, built in 1915. Shaun works part-time as a transportation planner from their home. In his role, he works to change government agencies from within. His job requires him to bring people together, listen, and get things done. In 2018, Shaun was elected to the Richland County Board of Supervisors. He has served on the Agriculture & Extension, Land Conservation, UWP-Richland, and Rules committees. He is the current chair of the Finance and Personnel Committee. On the County Board, he has advocated to address climate change and make investments in parks and the UWP-Richland Campus. He has routinely voted against excessive and unplanned spending, due to financial challenges in Richland County government. Shaun wants to serve as your Assembly Representative because he believes that better days are ahead for rural Wisconsin. He knows that prosperous farms, thriving towns, and quality schools are the foundation of rural life. He pledges to root out corporate welfare at the capitol and stand up for the hardworking people of Southwest Wisconsin, who built our communities and countryside.
